The Land-Grant Brewing Company's Sun-Grant Series is inspired by the Sun-Grant Association, a group of Land-Grant Universities that research and develop sustainable and environmentally friendly bio-based energy alternatives.
It can be a daunting task to prioritize one cause over another, to figure out how much to give, and to figure out what resources you have to give in the first place. Land-Grant’s commitment to being open and welcoming in our community has yielded nothing short of deep appreciation for our beloved home city and the people that live in it. You have helped us be a force for good in our neighborhood, in our city and our world.
Because of all of this, Land-Grant Brewing Company has become a philanthropic leader in our community, re-imagining the ways that a small business can share resources with our neighbors. We’ve partnered with local businesses to share our giving models and to fundraise as a community for causes close to our hearts.
That’s a lot to put back into a community! But how did we figure out where all of this goes? We listened! After a little over 2 years in business, we decided to look back on the initiatives that we had supported and to forge deeper roots in the community. We are of the opinion that nobody knows what a community needs better than the people who live, work and play there. From that – and asking about the values of the people here who make you delicious beer – we came up with three main tiers of engagement;
We are named Land-Grant, after all! We partner with all sorts of organizations – from local after school programs to scholarship funds for The Ohio State University. We’re proud supporters of the OSU Sea-Grant Association, the Neutron Man Memorial Fund, and that OSU Astronomy Department, as well as local educational initiatives for underserved communities in Linden, the Hilltop and Franklinton. We believe that access to education is fundamental for the long-term sustainability of a community. As proud Land-Grant University Grads (and ok – maybe some other schools too), we work hard to make sure that others are afforded the opportunities that were given to us.
Sustainability isn’t just all about water quality tests and closed loop economies (these are still very important!), it’s also about making sure that we’re doing as much as we can to support a healthy community by supporting those who work every day to make it great. We’re proud to work with the Gladden Community House, Franklinton Gardens, St. Stephen’s Aquastar Project, the Franklinton Board of Trade and the Homeless Families Foundation (just to name a few!). These organizations ensure access to resources that help keep our families and neighbors healthy and happy, contributing to long term community sustainability.
Land-Grant doesn’t just donate our money and space, we donate our time as well. We volunteer with several local initiatives, and have donated over 90 hours to Litter League, a litter abatement program in Franklinton that originated in Linden. We’ve picked 79 bags of trash in competition with other “Teams” from our neighborhood! That’s 79 bags of trash off of our streets and out of our sewage system.
Here’s where we asked – what matters to all of you? And boy, did you answer! We found out that we’re all deeply committed to supporting Pelotonia – we even brewed a special beer to help raise money for this amazing cause. We even found out that you love dogs as much as we do – you helped raise $3,529.98 in one night for the Capital Area Humane Society! You came to us with stories about organizations that matter deeply to you, and asked how we could partner together. Out of that, our Community Happy Hour was born – we gave you dedicated space in our taproom to educate your guests about your cause, and donated up to 20% of the Land-Grant Beer proceeds to your initiative. You raised money and awareness for the things that you care about.
The first line of Land-Grant’s Mission Statement is “To build community”. We all love beer, and we love sharing it with you in our taproom and around the city! You are all the best part of this crazy business, and we’ve decided to make it a priority to give back to the people who raise a beer to us every day.
So cheers to you!
