The Land-Grant Brewing Company's Sun-Grant Series is inspired by the Sun-Grant Association, a group of Land-Grant Universities that research and develop sustainable and environmentally friendly bio-based energy alternatives.
Part of our mission here at Land-Grant is to make sure that we are ensuring Long Term Community Sustainability here in our neighborhood and beyond. You help us do this every day by patronizing our taproom and buying delicious beer out at your favorite shops and bars. This year, Land-Grant donated over 1% of our gross revenue to local area initiatives under the tiers of Education, Sustainability and Community Building, continuing our commitment to responsibly steward our resources for the greater good. We were able to donate a little under $50,000 this in 2017.
It can be a daunting task to prioritize one cause over another, to figure out how much to give, and to figure out what resources you have to give in the first place. Land-Grant’s commitment to being open and welcoming in our community has yielded nothing short of deep appreciation for our beloved home city and the people that live in it. You have helped us be a force for good in our neighborhood, in our city and our world.
Because of all of this, Land-Grant Brewing Company has become a philanthropic leader in our community, re-imagining the ways that a small business can share resources with our neighbors. We’ve partnered with local businesses to share our giving models and to fundraise as a community for causes close to our hearts.
Some of our best fundraising efforts come through our favorite thing – beer! In 2017, four of our brands were designated to raise money for amazing initiatives. Our One Goal One Rye’d Rye Pale Ale raised $3,672 for Pelotonia, our 97.1 The Beer Premium Lager raised $1,803 for Canine Companions, Ra Honey Blonde sent $5,609 back into our sustainability initiatives, and we donated $3,000 to the Ohio State University Foundation toward the Neutron Man Fund from sales of Neutron Double IPA, named after Columbus’ beloved Neutron Man.
Monday through Wednesdays, Land-Grant hosts nonprofits in our taproom, donating 20% of the proceeds from the evening and providing exposure to causes that matter to our community. We opened our doors to over 66 different community initiatives this year, donating a total of $34,000 through our Community Happy Hour program. We’ve helped fund after school programs, promoted conservation initiatives and provided over 1,411 meals to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, just to name a few. In conjunction with our dedicated beer style, we raised over $12,276 for Pelotonia this year.
We’ve been known throw a great party on our block here at the corner of Town and Lucas. If you’ve drank beer at our Homage Barbecue or our Anniversary Party, or hung out with our best friends at our “Pups ‘n Pints” events, you were supporting Franklinton Farms, the Crew SC Foundation, The Capital Area Humane Society, and the Make a Woof! Foundation. All together, we raised $7,947 for these initiatives, including an impressive $3,529 in one night for the Humane Society.
Land-Grant employees will have donated more than 115 volunteer hours this year. We’re most proud of our initiative in partnership with the Franklinton Board of Trade to keep our neighborhood beautiful. We picked up over 80 large bags of trash over the summer – keeping it off our our streets and out of our sewage system. We also volunteered placing books in Free Little Libraries in Franklinton, fixing bicycles at Franklinton Cycleworks, planting trees for Earth Day, and weeding community gardens.
We’re incredibly proud of the impact that we’ve been able to provide, and we know that it’s because of you. Thank you so much for being part of our family – we count ourselves lucky to have such an incredible community.
It always makes us happy to see people sporting our awesome Land-Grant gear around town, but it makes us even happier to know that some of our best designs go to great causes. This year we were able to donate over $3,400 to Stonewall Columbus through the sale of our Pride T-Shirt designed by our very own Creative Director Walt Keys (he’s responsible for all of the awesome Land-Grant branding you see). We were also able to donate over $1,831 from sales from our Crew SC Gear and your generous tailgate donations to the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund.
Sustainability isn’t just all about water quality tests and closed loop economies (these are still very important!), it’s also about making sure that we’re doing as much as we can to support a healthy community by supporting those who work every day to make it great. We’re proud to work with the Gladden Community House, Franklinton Farms, Stratford Ecological Center, Ohio State University’s Waterman Farm, St. Stephen’s Project Aquastar, the Franklinton Board of Trade and the Homeless Families Foundation (just to name a few!). These organizations ensure access to resources that help keep our families and neighbors healthy and happy, contributing to long term community sustainability.
We are named Land-Grant, after all! We partner with all sorts of organizations – from local after school programs to scholarship funds for The Ohio State University. We’re proud supporters of the OSU Sea-Grant Association, the Neutron Man Memorial Fund, and that OSU Astronomy Department, as well as local educational initiatives for underserved communities in Linden, the Hilltop and Franklinton. We believe that access to education is fundamental for the long-term sustainability of a community. As proud Land-Grant University Grads (and ok – maybe some other schools too), we work hard to make sure that others are afforded the opportunities that were given to us.
The first line of Land-Grant’s Mission Statement is “To build community”. We all love beer, and we love sharing it with you in our taproom and around the city! You are all the best part of this crazy business, and we’ve decided to make it a priority to give back to the people who raise a beer to us every day.
So cheers to you!
