Homage x Land-Grant All-American BBQ Photos

This past Saturday, we through a massive BBQ cdelebration to launch our HOMAGE collaboration beer, All-American Pale Ale. Ray Ray’s and Oh! Burgers were on the grills. Colin Mills, Osage, Old Middle Modern, Montezuma, and Doc Robinson provided the soundtrack. Bacca Coffee kept us caffeinated, and SOW Movement helped us clean up responsibly. Check out some photos from the day here, and head over to our Facebook page for the full album.

New Brew: All American Pale

Sustainability at Land-Grant

Brewing beer requires large amounts of energy, agricultural ingredients, packaging material, water, and labor all to ferment and be poured in a single glass. We get hops, malts, and barley from all over the country and the world; boiling and cooling a single batch is incredibly energy intensive; at times a single barrel of beer can require up to six or seven barrels of water to make. If sustainability is best defined as meeting the needs of the present without preventing future generations from meeting their own needs, then brewing without caution to resources can be pretty unsustainable. So we asked ourselves how can we be become a better and more sustainable member of Columbus and the craft brewing industry.

From the beginning, instilling sustainable practices within the Land-Grant business model was something we wanted to do. But in the madness of launching and the small staff with which we started, a focus sustainability took a back seat to existing. Two years and thirty staff members later, we were able to begin focusing in earnest on becoming as sustainable as possible.

The diverse economy of brewing allows us to pursue many different facets of sustainability in our business: energy efficiency, water stewardship, supply chain management, waste management, wastewater diversion, etc. While becoming sustainable will require technological upgrades to our brewhouse and building, it will also require deep community partnerships and an engaged staff.

At the beginning of our third year, we surveyed our staff to find what they thought were the most important environmental changes we could affect as a company. We then aggregated these results, and came up with four major pillars of our new sustainability initiatives:

  1. MITIGATION OF LIFE CYCLE IMPACT
  2. REDUCTION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT
  3. WATER STEWARDSHIP
  4. DEEP COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

These pillars, and the initiatives within them, reflect the common themes that we seek to address in our sustainability program: reduction of greenhouse gases, closing loops, minimizing waste, decreasing our water use, removing our brewing byproduct from our wastewater, lowering the impact of our supply chain, and partnering with different farmers and environmental organizations throughout Columbus and Ohio to make a healthier, better, cleaner world.

We’ve set some aggressive goals for ourselves over the next three years, aiming to greatly reduce our impact, our waste, our emissions and become one of the most-sustainable breweries our size in the midwest. But with enough time, a caring staff, and neighbors we can rely on, we’ll be able to pull it off.

Check out our new sustainability page to learn more about the initiatives we’ve launched in 2017 and check back in the coming months as we get more programs up and running.

New Brew: Batch 300

For the 300th batch of Land-Grant beer brewed at our Franklinton production facility, the brew team wanted to whip up something special, a beer that exists outside of our M.O. To truly celebrate the occasion, we developed the single malt Imperial IPA you see here: brewed with Floor Malted Bohemian Pilsener Malt for a lighter body, and the most hops we’ve ever poured into a beer. Citra, Mosaic, and Moteuka hops shine through with a citrusy mojito-esque punch of lupulin. Here’s to 300 more!

Glory, for Club and City

Our partnership with the Crew SC began in 2015, and collaborating with the team is something we look forward to each year. In 2016 we were awarded the Corporate Partnership Activation of the Year based on efforts around Glory. The 2017 season officially kicks off on March 4th with the home opener against the Chicago Fire, but we’ve been preparing for the last couple of months, making sure Glory is ready for the big day.

From the first discussion around Glory, we knew we wanted to make sure the fans had a say in the style and ingredients. As loyal supporters, ourselves wanted to develop Glory with others like us and assembled a panel of fans who would help us decide the beer style, ingredients, and name. We produced two batches of both black and gold beers that were put up for a vote. After two rounds of taste tests, the Citra based American Wheat was announced the winner and we got moving on the first full batch. The name ‘Glory,’ was a natural fit, derived from the longstanding supporter chant, “Glory to Columbus!”

We are constantly seeking to improve our beers from year to year, and this year’s version of Glory includes the Huell Melon hop, addeded toward the end of the boil. This addition brings enhanced melon centric aromas with subtle notes of strawberry and citrus, amplifying the already fruity aroma of the beer. We like to think that it’s a beer light and refreshing enough for hot summer days in the Nordecke, but flavorful enough to drink at a bar taking in an away match.

The Gory launch festivities will begin in the Taproom at noon on February 26th for both cans and drafts. 6-packs will roll out to retailers the next day and drafts will be available throughout the city for the Crew SC home opener on March 4th at 1pm, after the official draft launch event on March 3rd, with our friends at 4th Street Bar & Grill, starting at 5pm.

On Opening Day, we hope to see you at the Taproom, where we’ll be celebrating the season kick-off, starting at noon. If you’re also attending the game, be sure to stop by our stand inside Mapfre, located in the lower concourse on the East side os the stadium.

Here’s to a new Crew SC season and Glory to Columbus!
