Sustainability at Land-Grant

Brewing beer requires large amounts of energy, agricultural ingredients, packaging material, water, and labor all to ferment and be poured in a single glass. We get hops, malts, and barley from all over the country and the world; boiling and cooling a single batch is incredibly energy intensive; at times a single barrel of beer can require up to six or seven barrels of water to make. If sustainability is best defined as meeting the needs of the present without preventing future generations from meeting their own needs, then brewing without caution to resources can be pretty unsustainable. So we asked ourselves how can we be become a better and more sustainable member of Columbus and the craft brewing industry.

From the beginning, instilling sustainable practices within the Land-Grant business model was something we wanted to do. But in the madness of launching and the small staff with which we started, a focus sustainability took a back seat to existing. Two years and thirty staff members later, we were able to begin focusing in earnest on becoming as sustainable as possible.

The diverse economy of brewing allows us to pursue many different facets of sustainability in our business: energy efficiency, water stewardship, supply chain management, waste management, wastewater diversion, etc. While becoming sustainable will require technological upgrades to our brewhouse and building, it will also require deep community partnerships and an engaged staff.

At the beginning of our third year, we surveyed our staff to find what they thought were the most important environmental changes we could affect as a company. We then aggregated these results, and came up with four major pillars of our new sustainability initiatives:

  1. MITIGATION OF LIFE CYCLE IMPACT
  2. REDUCTION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT
  3. WATER STEWARDSHIP
  4. DEEP COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

These pillars, and the initiatives within them, reflect the common themes that we seek to address in our sustainability program: reduction of greenhouse gases, closing loops, minimizing waste, decreasing our water use, removing our brewing byproduct from our wastewater, lowering the impact of our supply chain, and partnering with different farmers and environmental organizations throughout Columbus and Ohio to make a healthier, better, cleaner world.

We’ve set some aggressive goals for ourselves over the next three years, aiming to greatly reduce our impact, our waste, our emissions and become one of the most-sustainable breweries our size in the midwest. But with enough time, a caring staff, and neighbors we can rely on, we’ll be able to pull it off.

Check out our new sustainability page to learn more about the initiatives we’ve launched in 2017 and check back in the coming months as we get more programs up and running.

Glory, for Club and City

Our partnership with the Crew SC began in 2015, and collaborating with the team is something we look forward to each year. In 2016 we were awarded the Corporate Partnership Activation of the Year based on efforts around Glory. The 2017 season officially kicks off on March 4th with the home opener against the Chicago Fire, but we’ve been preparing for the last couple of months, making sure Glory is ready for the big day.

From the first discussion around Glory, we knew we wanted to make sure the fans had a say in the style and ingredients. As loyal supporters, ourselves wanted to develop Glory with others like us and assembled a panel of fans who would help us decide the beer style, ingredients, and name. We produced two batches of both black and gold beers that were put up for a vote. After two rounds of taste tests, the Citra based American Wheat was announced the winner and we got moving on the first full batch. The name ‘Glory,’ was a natural fit, derived from the longstanding supporter chant, “Glory to Columbus!”

We are constantly seeking to improve our beers from year to year, and this year’s version of Glory includes the Huell Melon hop, addeded toward the end of the boil. This addition brings enhanced melon centric aromas with subtle notes of strawberry and citrus, amplifying the already fruity aroma of the beer. We like to think that it’s a beer light and refreshing enough for hot summer days in the Nordecke, but flavorful enough to drink at a bar taking in an away match.

The Gory launch festivities will begin in the Taproom at noon on February 26th for both cans and drafts. 6-packs will roll out to retailers the next day and drafts will be available throughout the city for the Crew SC home opener on March 4th at 1pm, after the official draft launch event on March 3rd, with our friends at 4th Street Bar & Grill, starting at 5pm.

On Opening Day, we hope to see you at the Taproom, where we’ll be celebrating the season kick-off, starting at noon. If you’re also attending the game, be sure to stop by our stand inside Mapfre, located in the lower concourse on the East side os the stadium.

Here’s to a new Crew SC season and Glory to Columbus!

Stevesy and Deep Search Set Sail in Cans Next Week!

sea-grant_promo

We’re excited to announce the release of two special edition beers within their Sea-Grant Beer Series; Stevesy (5.5% ABV), a refreshing Helles Lager and Deep Search (7.7% ABV), a robust Baltic Porter. Deep Search arrives for its third year with much anticipation after a successful run in cans and on draft in 2015 and 2016. Stevesy debuted last year as a very limited release that was extremely well received in the Land-Grant Taproom and will be rolling out this year as a more widespread release in cans and on draft.

As the first two beers in what should be a packed 2017 beer lineup, both Stevesy and Deep Search were brewed and developed with adventure in mind. The brew team explored a different strain of yeast for both beers, and in order to achieve a beer as big as Deep Search, required them to brew the much lighter, Stevesy, a Helles Lager, to prepare the yeast for the task of fully fermenting Deep Search. Both beers lagered for 6 weeks, which makes for a heightened finish.

This launch is also in conjunction with the debut of the Land-Grant Collectors Club card series, an opportunity for the first patrons who visit the taproom and purchase a 6-pack to commemorate the beer and branding with a special edition collector’s card. This new program will run throughout 2017 for certain seasonal, limited, and special release beers, and cards can then be redeemed for specials and gifts throughout the year.

Stevesy will be available on draft and in six packs “to go” in the Land-Grant Taproom beginning Monday, January 2nd and Deep Search will debut on Thursday, January 5th. Six packs of both will roll out to grocery and specialty retailers beginning January 9th and drafts outside of the Land-Grant taproom will be available after the official planned launch event, January 12th at PiNS Mechanical

Land-Grant 2017 Release Schedule

cans

Thanks for making 2016 an amazing year for our little brewery! We’ve been hard at work churning out beer for all of your holiday endeavors, but we’ve also been diligently conspiring and plotting our course for 2017. And that means devising a road map for 2017 releases, which you can see below. Like any map, sometimes detours and reroutes are necessary, and who knows there may be a few surprise stops along the way, but this is generally speaking where we’re going in 2017, so pack accordingly. Speaking outside of my roadtrip metaphor, these are the beers we’re hoping to package this year (with most of these available in cans) but we’ll definitely mix in some fun limited releases, collaborations, and barrel aged fun that is not reflected in this chart. We’ve got some fun things planned for the next year, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Introducing the Land-Grant Collector’s Club!
In our brief two year existence, we’ve been proud to release over 40 different beers. Some of those were large scale year round releases, some were taproom only small batches, but they each came with their own collectible trading card. What started as a fun way to identify our beers in a tasting flight has taken on a life of its own, and we’ve developed a legion of dedicated card collectors here in Columbus.

We wanted to take this collection obsession to the next level, so we’re excited to announce the launch of the Land-Grant Collector’s Club. For each can release in 2017, we will have 50 limited edition collector cards available for the first 50 people to come in and pick up a six pack or pint of a newly launched (or relaunched) beer. Of course, each release will also be accompanied by its standard card as well which will be available throughout the beer’s run. To up the stakes a bit, if you collect multiple Collector’s Club cards throughout the year, we’ll reward you with some special Land-Grant swag:

4 Cards / Special Edition Koozy
8 Cards / Collector’s Club’s Club pint glass
12 cards / Super limited edition Land-Grant T-Shirt!

New Brew: Skull Session

lg_skullsession_11x17_poster_v1

The Land-Grant Brewing Company is excited to announce the launch of, Skull Session, a light drinking, malt forward Scarlet Lager that is part of their fall 2016 seasonal release group. Skull Session, with a 5.5% alcohol by volume, is a Scarlet Lager by name and color and carries with it a malt-driven balanced taste.

A Skull Session is known as one last strategy opportunity before the big game, and for the Columbus, Ohio based Land-Grant Brewing, it’s a tip of the hat to tradition, preparation, and perfect formation. The brewery discussed at length the look, taste, and ingredients that would come together in crafting such a tribute and are very excited to debut the final product at a time of year when families and fans alike can toast their traditions and teams. “As the season continues to change and most beers are getting darker, we wanted to brew a refreshing lager to take in the last few games of 2016 here in Columbus and beyond,” said Adam Benner, Land-Grant Brewing’s founder.

img_5235

Skull Session will be available for purchase on tap and in six-packs at the Land-Grant taproom, as well as craft beer retailers throughout the Columbus area, beginning Friday, November 18th and in fine craft beer retailers throughout Columbus beginning Monday, November 21st. Six packs will retail for $9.99.

This light drinking, malt forward Scarlet Lager owes a tip of its cap to a timeless autumn tradition. A chance to clear your mind before Saturday’s main event. This beer draws its ruddy hue from vienna and amber caramel malts, and its mostly traditional hop profile of Perle and Tettnang gets a dash of American flare via the addition of Cascade. This is a beer that’s in formation, and ready to march.
