Beer Garden Re-Opening Tuesday 5/19

Beer Garden

We’ve been getting a lot of questions this week regarding the reopening of the Land-Grant taproom and beer garden. Many of you are very excited to finally get out of the house and share a beer with friends, and many of you are understandably wary about the prospect of things opening back up. We’ve been planning, debating, implementing, and working to make all of the necessary adjustments to our operation for folks to safely and comfortably gather in our Beer Garden, we will reopen our outdoor area on 🍻TUESDAY, MAY 19TH at 3:00pm🍻.

At this point we only have plans to open our outdoor space for the foreseeable future, and it will essentially operate like your neighborhood pool. If it’s raining, we’re closed. If you’re not sure, you can visit for a simple yes/no answer. With this decision comes a lot of rules for customers and staff to follow in order to do this safely. You can find those rules listed below, as well as on our website. We appreciate your patience, compliance, and support and cannot wait to tip back a beer with you. Cheers!

1. All beer will be served in cans, no draft beer available at this time.
2. To maintain social distancing, all beer garden tables have been arranged to provide a minimum of 6ft plus space for walking between them.
3. Touchless hand sanitizer stations will be placed throughout the Beer Garden.
4. Staff will be implementing rigorous and regular cleaning procedures and policies in the service, restroom, seating, and common areas.

Re-Opening Update (Sunday 5/10)

We hope everyone is having a safe, and all-things-considered enjoyable Mother’s Day Sunday. Now that we’ve had a few days to digest the idea of re-opening this upcoming Friday, we wanted to take a moment to give a little insight into our thought process on the matter. While we are excited for the potential to re-open per the Governor’s announcement on Thursday, we have not made a final decision either way at this point. Our team has been working around the clock since to ensure that when we reopen, we are sure that we can do so safely, protecting both our staff and the public. We will continue to strictly abide all guidelines from the State and the Federal Government, as well as enacting our own policies.

There is still a lot to accomplish over the next few days to make this happen, and we will continue to update our progress via our social channels and on our website. We are in a unique position to be able to operate the amount of outdoor space that our beer garden provides, and while that certainly provides opportunity it brings with it unique challenges. We’re rapidly working to implement solutions to those challenges like hand sanitation stations, mobile ordering, contactless service, and of course distancing our seating options.

Thank You for your continued and humbling support. We are truly excited at the possibility to share our space and be among friends again, but we must ensure that we protect each and everyone that makes, pours, delivers, and drinks our beer. Please stay tuned for more updates this week. Cheers Columbus!

Introducing Collector’s Edition Massive Tallboys!

FEBRUARY 21,  2020 / COLUMBUS, OHIO – Land-Grant Brewing Company is excited to bring back their iconic Columbus Crew SC Supporter Beer, Massive Juicy Pale Ale, in spectacular 16oz. commemorative “Jersey” cans celebrating the club’s twenty-fifth season of MLS play. Each can features an iconic kit from Crew SC’s history and a fact about the season those shirts were worn on the field.

These special, limited edition, cans will be available exclusively at MAPFRE Stadium and for carry-out at Land-Grant’s Franklinton taproom. As an extra bonus each four-pack of beer will feature up to four different can designs in the same pack.

“We worked with our beer label producer to develop these labels so that thew six designs are printed in a row on the same spool. So every six cans coming off the line has different art,” says Land-Grant President and founder, Adam Benner. “Our packaging process isn’t that automated, so we cannot guarantee that all four will be different,  but odds are you’ll be getting three or four different cans per pack.”

On Saturday 2/22 Land-Grant will make these cans available for the very first time during a full-on Crew themed pre-season extravaganza. Representatives and players from the club will be on hand, as well as a handful of the actual kits being celebrated! The taproom will re-air the Crew’s MLS Cup win from 2008 leading into the broadcast of the team’s pre-season match against Houston at 7pm.

Massive is available in its regular 12oz six packs in the taproom and at Central Ohio craft beer retailers now. 16oz Commemorative four-packs will be available for purchase in the Land-Grant Brewing Company Franklinton taproom starting Saturday, 2/22. They will also be available for on-premise consumption at MAPRFE Stadium during 2020 Columbus Crew SC matches.

New Brew: Space-Grant Stargazer Black IPA with Coffee

Land-Grant Brewing Company to honor astronaut and Columbus resident, Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, as well as the 30th Anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope, with its sixth annual Space-Grant Black IPA release, Stargazer.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (January 22, 2019) – Land-Grant Brewing Company is excited to announce the sixth beer in their series of Space-Grant themed beers, Stargazer Black IPA brewed with Crimson Cup Coffee. The annual series, named for an aerospace-focused spin-off of the Land-Grant University Program, seeks to celebrate the spirit of space exploration and discovery through the release of deep-space-black IPAs.

Stargazer distills Land-Grant’s mission of community, education, and story-telling into a beautifully designed and masterfully crafted can of beer telling the intertwined story Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan and the Hubble Space Telescope. Sullivan—a member of the vaunted 1978 astronaut class of “Thirty Five New Guys” and Columbus resident—was the first female American astronaut to complete a spacewalk, served on the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope thirty years ago, ran COSI from 1996-2005, headed the Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy at Ohio State, and served as the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) before releasing her memoir *Handprints on Hubble* this past year.

The can art for Stargazer takes its inspiration from the unofficial emblem of that famed 1978 class of astronauts in which a swarm of thirty-five cartoon astronauts float in, above, and around a space shuttle. Given Dr. Sullivan and that class’ involvement in the Hubble’s deployment and maintenance through the years—and with this year marking the famous telescope’s 30th year in operation—we swapped out the shuttle for the telescope but left the amazing team of astronauts suspended in space.

“I’m delighted that Land-Grant chose to salute Hubble – a truly magnificent flying machine – and my Class of ’78 colleagues with their latest brew,” said Sullivan on the project. “I hope their clever design inspires people to reach for the stars.”

“When researching ideas and potential themes for this year’s Space-Grant beer, starting first at the Hubble 30th Anniversary, I dug deeper into the telescope’s history and was amazed that the story had such a connection to not just Columbus, but our neighborhood,” said Walt Keys, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Land-Grant Brewing Company. “I immediately read Dr. Sullivan’s book and came away inspired, the amazing folks at COSI were able to connect us and it’s been a real honor and privilege to have been able to meet her and to have her involved with this year’s Space-Grant beer. It’s a true example of the connectivity that is possible through a community built by craft beer. That it can create these experiences and allow us to share these stories in a truly shared way.”

The beer itself varies slightly from year’s past in its notable addition of Crimson Cup Kenya Kanake coffee: “We do a small coffee version of our Space Grant IPA series every year, and they always are a brewer’s favorite, so we were really looking forward to being able to do the whole batch with coffee this time around,” said Dan Shaffer, Head Brewer at Land-Grant Brewing Company. “ Brandon and Joe at Crimson Cup led us through a line up of really stellar and interesting coffees, but we all agreed the tropical, lime and caramel notes from the Kanake were made for an IPA. The combination of Citra, Cashmere and Sabro hops has tangerine, tropical, melon, and coconut aromas that meld with the coffee. The process has really influenced my idea of what coffee is and how it can be utilized to enhance a beer.”

Stargazer Space-Grant Black IPA with Coffee will be available at the Land-Grant taproom on Friday, January 24th and in craft beer retailers around Central Ohio in the following Week. It registers a 7.8% ABV and will retail for $11.99/six pack with a portion of its proceeds benefiting the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Kathryn D. Sullivan’s Book, *Handprints on Hubble*, was released on MIT Press in 2019 and is available from their website and fine book sellers everywhere.

About Kathryn D. Sullivan
Kathryn D. Sullivan is a NASA astronaut (retired), former Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), former President & CEO of the COSI, and an inductee in the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

In 1984, Columbus resident Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first American woman to spacewalk. Six years later she served on the mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. Now in its 30th year of operation, Hubble has provided earthlings with a stunning gallery of imagery from deep space and has provided invaluable data to researchers worldwide. A member of the vaunted “Thirty Five New Guys” astronaut class of 1978—whose unofficial class emblem inspired this Black IPA’s can artwork—Sullivan made three trips to space before serving as president of COSI here in Columbus. We’re beyond honored to salute Dr. Sullivan via this year’s Space-Grant beer, and to be able to support the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation via its proceeds.

This Black IPA, the sixth in our annual Space-Grant series, features Chinook, Cashmere, Citra, Cryo-Sabro hops, and Crimson Cup Kanya Kanake Coffee for an IPA that delivers a tropical coffee payload and pours as black as the deepest reaches of space.
