The brainchild of our newest brewer, Dan Shaffer, Trips Right is a German IPA available on draft. We asked him to share a little insigth on the development of this limited release brew…
What was your inspiration for this beer?
The wife and I took a trip to Provence when I was studying for my Brewing degree in Scotland, and on a wine tour I had an amazing white wine with very a fresh melon/musty grape flavor, and I’ve always wanted to capture that in beer. I’ve used Hallertau Blanc hops in homebrewed saisons with varying levels of success, but now that I’ve paired it with Huell Melon hops in an IPA I think I’ve pretty much nailed it.
Tell us a little bit about the name, Trips Right
Trips Right is a football formation where three receivers line up in a bunch to the right. Trips in this case also means a figurative trip to the right (or east) on a map to Germany. Thus the three German hops in this beer, Magnum, Hallertau Blanc and Huell Melon.
What do you love about this beer?
I like it because it captures a unique flavor profile in the friendly confines of an IPA. Not all IPA’s have to be piney/citrusy/tropical, and at 5.5% abv you can actually drink a pint or two.
This German IPA lines up in with three varieties of German hops split out to the right. Delivering almost wine-like flavors of green grape and cantaloupe and aromas of musty grape, gooseberry, and clementine this is a straw-colored medium body IPA with a few tricks up its sleeve.
